HiphAthon: Climate + UrbanTech Challenge

AI-powered green-city problem-solving rooted in community experience.

What it is

Start with a real city problem. Build a response people can understand.

HiphAthon is a 4–6 week team challenge where participants use community insight, responsible AI, research, UrbanTech, and creative communication to explore an urban climate issue.

A team might address extreme heat, flooding, waste, air quality, energy use, green access, food systems, mobility, or another documented local need.

What teams create

Evidence, a practical concept, and a public demo.

01

Problem statement

A focused description of the issue, place, people affected, and reason it matters.

02

Research brief

A source-checked summary of evidence, community insight, and open questions.

03

Solution concept

A clear explanation of the proposed response and who would use it.

04

Prototype

A mockup, toolkit, dashboard concept, campaign, model, or service demonstration.

05

Impact plan

Realistic outcomes, risks, measures, partners, and next steps.

06

Public demo

A concise presentation designed for community members and invited partners.

The weekly flow

Research with care. Build with purpose.

  1. Learn

Understand climate justice, urban conditions, responsible AI, and the challenge area.

  2. Research

Gather community insight and reliable evidence without collecting unnecessary personal data.

  3. Build

Create and test a focused prototype, toolkit, campaign, or solution concept.

  4. Refine

Check feasibility, accessibility, potential harm, claims, and the impact plan.

  5. Showcase

Demo the work, receive feedback, and identify the next responsible step.

Responsible innovation

AI can assist the work. It cannot replace judgment.

Participants must review AI output, verify important facts, protect private information, identify uncertainty, and avoid presenting generated content as community evidence. A HiphAthon concept is not an approved city project, public policy, engineering plan, or safety-certified product unless an authorized body separately confirms that status in writing.

Bring a real challenge to HiphAthon.

Community organizations, educators, researchers, technology partners, and city-facing institutions can propose a challenge or discuss a future cohort.
